Pool Draining and Acid Washing

At Tres Rios Valley Pool & Tile, we perform stress-free draining and acid washing to restore your pool’s surface and remove calcium and mineral buildup as well as stains. Our specialists utilize a chemically proven acid to water mixture that handles stains, discoloration, and scale formation with ease, along with chemical additives that help prevent damage to your surface. Not only do we remove stains and minerals - we also neutralize your pool surface to minimize potential damage to your plaster or pebble finish.

Our procedure includes a thorough inspection of your surface, wall fittings, drain covers, and lights to ensure proper safety measures and equipment are in place prior to refilling your pool, ensuring you and your family can safely return to the water once it’s filled!

Why Drain and Acid Wash?

In Arizona, it is recommended that pools be drained and refilled - and in some cases, acid washed - every 3-5 years. The reason for this is that over time, minerals and calcium scale can slowly build up in your pool’s water, leading to issues such as staining, discoloration, calcium buildup at the waterline, rough or sharp surfaces, and dull water.

This is especially true for Arizona, where our tap water can sometimes have calcium hardness levels starting at 600-800ppm or more, which is well above the recommended range for plaster or pebble surfaces (200-400ppm).

Additionally, certain chemicals can also slowly build up in your water - especially if you use stabilized chlorine products like chlorine tablets or granular trichlor/dichlor-based “shock.” These forms of chlorine contain trace amounts of cyanuric acid (CYA), or stabilizer/conditioner, which help to protect the chlorine in your water from the sun’s intense UV rays.

CYA works best at levels between 30-50ppm, but when levels increase above that range, your chlorine’s effectiveness is reduced, causing you to need more chlorine to keep your water properly sanitized and free of algae. Unfortunately, CYA can typically only be removed by dilution - or, in other words - draining and refilling your pool with fresh water.
